VOCATIONAL
The main responsibility of the committee is to arrange vocational visits and so far this season we have had a most enlightening visit to RAF Kinloss where we were given an introduction to the Squadrons and an explanation of the function of the unit. This was followed by a tour of a Nimrod aircraft where all the various stations and duties were explained in detail.
The next visit was to the new Highland Archive centre where we were given a most interesting tour of the facility shown the record storage and restoration facilities and then shown various documents relative to the area and dating back to the 1750’s. This unit houses all the archives that were previously stored in various buildings around the area under one roof and is open to the public for the provision of information. In addition the building houses the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages and contains two registration chapels which are used dependant on the size of the event. The facility can also be reserved for conference use and can accommodate a maximum of 80 people.
The next visit planned is on Thursday 21st Jan 2010 and will be to the new Millburn Academy. Schools have changed dramatically over the years and it is hoped that the visit will be a real eye opener for members.
The following month sees us visiting D Chisholm & Sons Funeral Directors where we hope to see all the facilities which are available to deal with final days of the deceased.
Other visits have been pencilled in but not yet arranged and these include the Police Headquarters, Town House, Inverness Airport, Eden Court theatre, the new marina and a possible look at the Centre for Health Science.
Rotary Young Leadership Award (RYLA)
Rotary Clubs in Inverness sponsor a total of six young people to take part in RYLA and this club supports two of these, one boy and one girl. RYLA is generally aimed at S5/6 pupils who attend the Nethybridge Outdoor Centre for a week and take part in extreme sports outdoor activities. In addition they receive daily talks from members of the business community about enterprise and the need to develop an entrepreneurial spirit and it is found that in general this week tends to be a life changing event which has a profound effect on the young people taking part. After the event the young people are invited to make a presentation to the club outlining their experience and the benefits they have received.
Challenge Enterprise
This is a weekend event which takes place over a weekend in Aberdeenshire and involves young people working in groups and having presentations from the business community and then formulating their own business plan for an imaginary business. At the end of the weekend the groups are then invited to make a presentation to the whole gathering and awards are made dependant on the most realistic business development.
Interviews
The Club provides Mock Interview techniques to school leavers and several of our members have been trained to deliver the course. It contains information on “How to apply for a job” ,“how to behave at interview”, “What happens if I don't have a reply within a week” and “how to gain promotion within a company”. This course is offered to secondary schools in the area and has been very successful in the past.
It is normal for us to offer the facility early in the New Year for delivery prior to the Easter break.
